Thirty Five years ago on a hot July afternoon I was standing at St Peter's Church Harold Wood Essex, waiting for my sister to arrive at her wedding, she pulled up to the church in a gleaming, sparkling vintage Rolls Royce. I have always had a passion for classic cars and thought wow, that looks really good, this is what I want to do.
At the time I was a taxi driver, but classic cars was my hobby and I always wanted to own a Rolls Royce but could never afford one. In those days you had to be rich or do weddings to own a Rolls Royce. The very next week I bought my first Mercedes, an oldish brown diesel model, but never mind I had big plans for it. I had it sprayed white and started using it as a taxi, but also doing airport runs, theatres and of course weddings. Very soon I had bought my first Rolls Royce, with the help of my dad, a blue Rolls Royce Silver Shadow, that needed painting but other than that it was perfect. I quickly came to a deal with the dealer who discounted the money off for a respray ( lucky I had a friend who was a good sprayer!) .
I was off on a journey of a lifetime. What started as a hobby quickly became a full time business, adding many more wedding cars to my fleet, appearing on TV several times and taking me all the way from my local registry office Langtons House right up to Buckingham Palace.
Brides kept asking me "do you know any good photographers" when they came round to book our wedding cars. This was of course in the days before the internet , so instead of just sitting in the wedding cars at the wedding I looked to see how the photographer was doing. If they had a great way with the bride and groom and looked to be taking good pictures I would discretely ask for their business card and asked them to join our ever growing team. I soon built a team of some of the best wedding photographers in Essex.
Word soon got around and wedding shops and wedding venues in Essex asked us to supply them as we had a ready made team of top professionals . We added wedding videography and wedding DJ's along the way turning Abbey Weddings into one of the biggest and best wedding companies in Essex. We have probably now attended at least 10,000 weddings over the last 35 years.
Based in Romford , near the A12 and M25 has been a big advantage as we can travel to Hertfordshire, Kent and London very swiftly. We are the preferred wedding suppliers to Crondon Park Wedding Venue Stock, De Rougemont Manor Hotel, Marygreen Manor Hotel, Woolston Manor, The Old Rectory and The Kings Oak High Beach Essex and many other venues.
To see videos of all our wedding cars please go to "garyatabbey" on YouTube, we have 170+ videos with over nearly 2 million views. To see the latest pictures please view our gallery.
We supplied the silver Rolls Royce Phantom for BBC Panorama "The fake Sheik" (search for it on Youtube) and the chauffeur cars for Channel 4 Dispatches, "Say yes to the dress" as well as the cars on the only ever live BBC "Don't Tell the Bride" (no pressure there then!) The Only Way is Essex (Towie) and Curvy Brides Boutique. I once asked a TV producer, "why do you keep asking me to supply wedding cars for your programmes" he replied " because we know your professional, reasonable priced and will turn up on time with high quality cars". High praise indeed.
